Serena's Home-Made Goodies And Crafts

On this last weekend of May, we will be at the Gonubie Festival. I’m highly excited about it. I’ve always enjoyed a great street party. Come see us. We’ll be near the entrance, next to the children’s exhibits. Try some of my soon to be famous fudge, any of the eleven types, including the unbelievably delicious dark chocolate, dark chocolate with pecans, the decadent snowballs which are white chocolate, coconut and pecans, not to mention some of Millie’s Original South African. All types are only R5 a piece, so do come and try it. You will not be disappointed. And if you read it here, tell us about it. We’ll also be selling the seashell mobiles and candles, plants, and worm wee (100% organic plant food, guaranteed). Some of the bromeliads are in bloom, and you cannot beat the price.

We’re now offering a new craft: sea shell candles. They’re lovely for a braai, beach party, any occasion, and the shells are guaranteed from Gonubie beaches.

Our macrame’ sea shell and urchin mobiles have become quite popular. We’ve found every single shell and driftwood here in Gonubie, cleaned and varnished ourselves, so it’s the genuine article. If you’re a fan of the beach, stop by for home decor at unbelievably reasonable prices. Wes has now created mobiles made completely with driftwood, so if you desire unusual decor, check them out.

Don’t forget I’ve got the beaded cross stitch greeting cards, including some labeled Gonubie for the tourists. Take a look. It’s a bit different. I’m also selling macrame’ with shells key chains and bracelets/anklets, and yes, we found the shells here in Gonubie and yes, I did the macrame’. I’ve not seen anything like this before. It makes an excellent gift, so check them out.

Another great thing we’re offering is Serenity Pet and House Sitting. We love animals, and we especially love Gonubie, so feel free to relax on holiday or if you need to leave home for awhile. We’ll watch over and feed your pets with great affection, water your houseplants and garden, turn lights on/off, bring in your mail, anything you might require. Go here for further details.

Get your soft American cookie and peanut butter cookies, herb, garlic and poppy tortillas and taco shells, refried beans & cheese, chicken pie, fresh scones, mini cornbread muffins, crab au gratin burritos, pimento cheese spread and French onion dip at request at the Gonubie Flea Market in front of the Gonubie municipal buildings. If we aren’t selling something you might like to try in this list, let me know and I’ll have them for you the next weekend.

We also sell inexpensive plants, decorated plant pots, sea shell mobiles, second-hand DVDs, CDs and books. See you there.

Trophy Treats

A Great New Pie Shop At Trophie Treats

Now we have just what we needed in Gonubie, a pie shop. However, this one doesn’t offer just the normal pies. This one offers biltong and venison pies, so I had to give them a try. I ordered two venison pies, the only ones that were left at the end of the day, and I can only praise them. They were loaded with meat and gravy, with no vegetables to waste the space. Solid, tender, juicy venison. This is the place to go if you wish something different. And yes, they have biltong pies, along with chicken and beef. Different types of biltong off the stick are offered, including chili, my favorite.

On the sides, you can pick up fresh rusks and biscuits, with cold drinks in the cooler. Shamrock pies are also available, so for a quick take away, give this place a try. I honestly enjoyed every single bite. No complaints, only compliments. I shall return soon. Oh, and just to mention, they offer trophies too, so please, drop on by and give them your support.

Nina's Gonubie

Nina’s Gonubie Has New Menu

I love Nina’s, but I must warn you: do not enter the premises if you are hungry. They have expanded their already excellent menu. They continue to offer the frozen meals of all types, including lasagnas, macaroni, cottage pies and others, but they have extended the varieties. They also now offer a true garlic roll, and I could not resist purchasing one. It is not like the type you get in the grocery store with the garlic butter only slabbed on the top. Nina’s garlic roll has the butter in each slice, loaded with the flavorsome garlic and parsley. It’s perfect for throwing on the braai or popping in the oven, and it melts in your mouth.

I ordered a Regina pizza this time, ham and mushrooms, and I requested it to be crispy. Let me just say, it was crispy, just the way I ordered it. I love it when a cook gets it right.

And for the deserts I must rave. You can get the usuals I have mentioned before, but they are now serving double thick milkshakes in such flavors as chocolate, vanilla, chocolate mint, and my personal favorite, blueberry cheesecake. A great treat to take to the beach. They also offer chocolate brownies, the type I grew up with. This is something every person should try. We consider them common in the USA, but I would love South Africans to discover these delectable cakes.

Don’t forget. Nina’s delivers, and the prices can’t be beat.

Gonubie Super Spar

Quick Lunch From The Gonubie Super Spar

Every Saturday, Wes and I pick up a quick lunch at the Super Spar while we sit at our flea market stall. They actually have a wonderful deli, and I’ve enjoyed many of their offers, including spaghetti bolognaise, mutton stew, fried chicken, grilled chicken, fried calamari, beef stew, samp and beans, tripe, and fish and chips. Various vegetables offered include roasted potatoes, spinach and feta, different types of rice and a huge salad selection. But I rave on this occasion for the various pies and pastries they offer.

I usually order the grilled russian cheese roll, and it’s always hot and juicy, with the pastry flaky and delicious. This past Saturday, however, they were out of those particular rolls, so I tried the chicken sausage roll. This was a first for me, and it was so wonderful, I ordered it the next day. The chicken is tender and tasty, and I highly recommend it.

They actually offer all types of pies: chicken, beef and onion, steak and kidney. They also offer breakfasts, including fried eggs, back bacon and toast. Seriously, give their deli a try. The food is worth the money.

The Musselcracker

Another Visit To The MusselCracker

It has been some time since we’ve visited the MusselCracker, mainly because the last time we visited the service was so horrible. Given, it was off season, but in my opinion, that is no excuse to be ignored by a waitress.

However, this past Easter Weekend we set up our sea shell mobile stall at the beach front, and visited the MusselCracker for chips and hot coffee. I ordered them take away so we could eat them at the stall, and I have to say the waitress was quick and friendly. The chips took no more than five minutes, and she brought me everything I needed to sweeten my coffee. I do suppose it’s because it’s the holiday season that the service is nice, so I will wait until winter and visit again. Time will tell.

Fruit And Veg Town

Another Visit To Fruit And Veg Town

A Saturday can’t go by without us visiting Fruit and Veg Town for our weekly groceries. It’s’ so nice having a clean, inexpensive market in Gonubie, something we’ve really missed after moving out of East London. Once more, the fruit and veggies were in prime condition, and they have expanded on their herb and spice collection. And his seedlings have also expanded. You can find almost any vegetable you wish to plant on offer. Beautiful plants, great prices.

Once more, thank you for the smiles and helpful service. We’ll be back.

Josie’s stall has been around for a while. I remember buying oven gloves off her a few years back and they are still going strong. The best oven gloves we own. For me that makes Josie’s products worth the money. And the wonderful thing is that her products are not expensive. So give Josie’s Aprons And African Crafts stall a look on Saturday mornings and discover the value for money yourself. Especially if you are looking for something with an African theme.

The Fig Tree

Outdoors At The Fig Tree

Well, once we had done the gardening shopping and the food shopping Tuesday afternoon it was time to cool off at The Fig Tree with a cold beer. And with our government removing yet another right to choose from their citizens we had sit outside on their new deck. No real complaints about the deck though. Sitting under the giant Fig Tree, that the establishment gets it’s name from, is a sheer pleasure on a hot afternoon. It is one of the natural wonders of Gonubie.
The only problem was that it took more than 10 minutes to get served. Terry just seemed to have me on his “ignore list”. Despite the fact that there was no one else waiting at the bar when I went in to order our first beers he ignored me and then served 4 people before me. I put it down to it being busy, but he did much the same thing when I went in for the next round. And then he did the same thing to Serena when she went in. Now, our money is the same colour as everybody else’s so maybe he just doesn’t like long haired hippy types. No matter what the reason, we certainly missed Carol and her ever friendly and efficient service. Come back Carol please!!!

The welcome stop on the way home gets :) :) :) on the happy factor.
The service, unfortunately, gets :( :( :( on the not happy factor.

Lavender Blue

Fruit & Veg At Lavender Blue

On the way back from Beacon Bay on Tuesday and stopping at Lavender Blue and Michel’s Garden Shed is a must for those with either, or bother, the passions for food and gardening. We wanted to talk to Michel about some palm seedlings we bought from her a while back but she was on a much deserved holiday. So we bought 3 chilli plants and headed for the fruit and veg stall in Lavender Blue. Got a great price on 20kgs of stewing tomatoes. Plus great prices on turnips, lemons, sweet corn and nectarines. It is always a pleasure shopping at this stall. There are always good prices on good quality produce.
They get :) :) :) :) on the happy factor.
